Recently Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the hit Japanese Shonen manga series One Piece decided to go on break for his manga. Eiichiro Oda has been writing one piece for over 25 years. He wrote and illustrated around 15 pages weekly only taking a few breaks through the decades he has been penning the manga. However now that Oda's is approaching his mid-40s his health is slowly deteriorating. He does not seem to have the same amount of energy. Moreover, he is now working on a live-action show for Netflix and multiple spin-off shows as well. Oda needed to take an emergency one-month break after being rushed to the hospital on November 15. He is currently recovering but needs time to relax and heal.
Oda overall needs to start taking more breaks. One Piece is a worldwide sensation garnering billions of fans all over the world. However, the only way this story can keep going and conclude in the next decade is if Oda stays well with his health. Japanese work culture seems to be very toxic as a whole. This has led to much employee abuse from threats to unpaid overtime. Oda is being pushed by the publishing company to get his work done since they heavily rely on his creation for income. But they soon realize that if they do not start seeing him as a human this will just lead to them losing more profits overall. As a long-time fan, I am open to Oda taking longer breaks if that means he will produce better high-quality stuff.
